Universities research is clear: changing our food policies is key to fight climate change. Here at Plant Based Universities UCLouvain, we believe students have the potential to make real change at universities and beyond. What better place to start the transition than the institutions where environmental research is born? Signatures displayed: 132. Current signature goal: 1,000. Counts can change. ## What is the problem? ### 57% of food emissions come from animal products Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal UCLouvain serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution. ## What can we do? ### 2000 meals/day served at UCLouvain Every plate is a decision UCLouvain makes and can change. UCLouvain has already committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2035 and has signed Wallonia's Green Deal for sustainable canteens. Going 100% plant-based is one of the most visible, controllable ways to actually deliver on that promise. ## Is that even possible? University of Graz went fully plant-based. Edinburgh hit 70%. Antwerp has taken beef off the menu and is aiming for 80% vegetarian and plant-based meals by 2030 — and UCLouvain can be next\! ## Petition To Let's make UCLouvain plant-based\! Plant-Based Universities is an international grassroots student campaign calling on universities to transition, in a just and sustainable way, to 100% plant-based catering. This institutional shift sharply cuts the university's own contribution to the climate and nature crises, and it moves public opinion towards a fully plant-based food system. The campaign is now active at more than 100 universities across Europe. With this petition, we ask UCLouvain to be part of the shift towards a sustainable and just plant-based food system by making its catering fully plant-based. The science is clear: a move towards plant-based diets is essential to tackle the climate crisis, and universities have a key role to play in spreading that message.
