University of Bath Students endorse Plant-Based Menus to Slash Carbon Emissions and Tackle the Climate Crisis

April 17, 2026
  • On Thursday 16th April, the Summit at The University of Bath Students’ Union voted by a large majority of 17-5 for the Students’ Union to endorse efforts to promote plant-based food on campus [1].
  • The University of Bath’s campaign for 100% Plant-Based catering launched just a month ago, but dozens of students had already shown their support, making Bath the 29th university campus to pass a motion following the efforts of Plant Based Universities [2].
  • Through passing the motion, the Students’ Union reaffirmed the university’s belief that “Reducing meat consumption is by far the single largest action we can take to reduce our carbon footprint” [3], and recognised that the transition to 100% plant-based catering could reduce carbon emissions and water use by 75%. [4]

The University of Bath is the latest to join dozens of universities taking action to reduce the impact of their catering on our planet. Following the efforts of students at the University of Bath, the Students’ Union becomes the latest to confirm their commitment to tackling the climate crisis. This motion follows similar successful votes at Southampton in February [5], and Bristol and Imperial College London last year to move towards plant-based menus [6]. Bath also joins many other universities across Europe in voting for the transition towards plant-based menus. Just the day before, April 15th, students in Fribourg, Switzerland voted for their university to adopt plant-based by default. The successful motion at Bath represents the 29th commitment made by universities towards plant-based food following work by Plant Based Universities campaigners.

Imara Wright, a University of Bath student who led efforts to pass this motion said:

“I am overjoyed and filled with hope after managing to get a win in Bath. I feel really proud that our student representatives are recognising the science; prioritising sustainability in a political climate that sometimes feels hopeless. The movement has also had great enthusiasm from other students in the last few months, and I am really optimistic about the long-term success of the campaign in Bath.”
