## Make KU Leuven 100% plant-based\!

We, as students, are demanding a future where KU Leuven’s catering is 100% plant-based. The environmental destruction caused by animal agriculture is undeniable, and universities have the power to drive the transformation. Let’s make it happen. Let’s turn KU Leuven fully plant-based\!

## What is the problem?

### 57% of food emissions come from animal products

Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. As one of Belgium’s largest universities, KU Leuven has the opportunity to make a huge difference through its catering choices.

## What can we do?

### Millions of meals served every year

Alma serves millions of meals every year, and every meal is an opportunity to reduce our environmental impact, take animal welfare seriously, and make delicious, nutritious and affordable food accessible to everyone. Universities should lead the way towards a better future, not just teach us about climate change. Practice what you preach.

Plant-based food isn't about giving up taste. It's about discovering more possibilities while making choices that are better for the planet. And what better place to lead this change than a university, where critical thinking and innovation are at the heart of everything we do?

Since October 2025, Plant-Based Universities Leuven has been working towards this change, bringing the issue to the table and thinking together with our university about how we can move towards more plant-based.

## Is that even possible?

Absolutely\! KU Leuven already recognises the need for a more sustainable food system. They signed the Flemish protein-shift ambition to get 60% of our protein intake from plant-based sources by 2030. But why stop there when other campaigns show us that we can be way more ambitious?

Across Europe, students are turning to action. At the University of Graz, students achieved 100% plant-based catering. At the University of Cambridge, student representatives voted to support a transition towards fully plant-based university catering. In Edinburgh, they are at 70% plant-based catering. And these are just a few of the many wins PBU has had.

But change is happening closer to home, too. In May 2026, the VUB student council announced an action plan aiming for 80% plant-based catering (within less than a year of campaigning\!)

These examples show what's possible when students speak up and push for change. And KU Leuven can be next.
