## We are turning the University of Fribourg fully plant-based\!

A sustainable university starts with what we put on our plates. Join the movement to make the University of Fribourg fully plant-based.

Signatures displayed: 83. Current signature goal: 500. Counts can change.

## What is the problem?

### 57% of food emissions come from animal products

Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal Universtiy of Fribourg serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution.

## What can we do?

### 1'000 meals/day served at the University of Fribourg

Every plate is a decision the University of Fribourg makes and can change. A motion to becoming plant based by default has already passed in the student's council. Going 100% plant-based is one of the most visible, controllable ways to actually deliver on that promise.

## Is that even possible?

University of Graz went fully plant-based. University of Neuchâtel made its only cafeteria fully plant-based, Basel and Bern are close to becoming fully plant-based — and Uni Fribourg can be next\!

## Petition

To the canteens at the University of Fribourg

We are living through a climate and ecological crisis that requires concrete action from all parts of society including universities. The food we eat is an important part of this transition. Animal agriculture, particularly the production of meat and dairy, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water consumption and biodiversity loss.

Universities have a responsibility not only to educate about sustainable development, but also to put these principles into practice. As a place of learning, research and innovation, the University of Fribourg can lead by example and contribute to a more sustainable food system.

### Why plant-based?

Shifting towards plant-based food offers significant environmental and social benefits:

- Climate protection: Plant-based foods generally have a much lower carbon footprint than meat and dairy products[ \[1\]](https://ourworldindata.org/carbon-opportunity-costs-food).
- Efficient use of resources: Producing plant-based food requires considerably less land and water than producing animal products[\[2\]](https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aaq0216).
- Biodiversity: Reducing the demand for animal agriculture can help preserve ecosystems and reduce pressure on natural habitats.
- Animal welfare: A plant-based food system allows us to reduce our reliance on intensive animal farming.
- Health: A well-planned plant-based diet can provide all the nutrients needed for a healthy diet and is associated with a number of health benefits[\[3\]](https://pbu-imperial.org/faqs#what-about-health).
- Accessibility: Plant-based meals can be affordable, varied and appealing to everyone, regardless of whether someone chooses to eat plant-based all the time or only occasionally[\[4\]](https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2021-11-11-sustainable-eating-cheaper-and-healthier-oxford-study).

### What are we asking for?

We call on the University of Fribourg to transition its food and catering services to 100% plant-based.

This means making plant-based food the standard across university cafeterias, canteens, catering and events, while ensuring that meals are nutritious, affordable, varied and accessible to all members of the university community.

A transition towards plant-based catering does not mean limiting choice. On the contrary, it means creating a food environment that is more sustainable by default and offers delicious, diverse and inclusive meals to students, staff and visitors.

Universities have the opportunity to be part of the solution. The University of Fribourg can take a concrete step towards a more sustainable future.

By signing this petition, I express my support for a fully plant-based University of Fribourg and for a sustainable, affordable and inclusive food system on our campus.
